On 25 March 2021, CIBEL Co-Director Professor Heng Wang spoke on a panel at the 115th Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law (ASIL).

In a panel “International Trade Dispute Settlement 2.0”Professor Wang discussed the impact of the void in dispute settlement at the WTO and whether this was likely to be resolved in the future. He reviewed the current status of the multi-party interim appeal arrangement (MPIA) and explained why it has not been used and what MPIA will look like long term. Professor Wang also addressed the impact of the pandemic on trade disputes’ practice. In particular, he explored the types of disputes likely to emerge (e.g., measures related to trade restrictions, intellectual property) post-pandemic and the ways in which these disputes might be resolved.

Other panellists included Ms Cherise Valles, Deputy Director at the Advisory Centre on WTO Law (ACWL), Dr Geraldo Vidigal, University of Amsterdam and Alan Yanovich, Partner of the Akin Gump LLP, and Professor Kathleen Claussen, the University of Miami School of Law, all leading experts in academia and practice.

A recent paper of Professor Wang on trade agreements is available here.
