Herbert Smith Freehills China International Business & Economic Law (CIBEL) Centre would like to congratulate Qi (Belle) Guo, Peicheng (Matthew) Wu, Shangxuan (Martin) Wu and Dan Xie for being awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree at UNSW Law and Justice in 2022.
Dr. Qi (Belle) Guo
Qi (Belle) Guo conducted her research on ‘Continuous Disclosure of Chinese Cross-border Listed Companies in Australia: Challenges and Proposals’ under the supervision of Associate Professor Marina Nehme and Associate Professor Xiaochuan Weng.
Her PhD project was funded by the Australian Government’s Endeavour Leadership Program. Belle holds an LLM in Commercial Law and an LLB from the Northwest University of Politics and Law. She has published papers in top-ranked journals under the ABDC Journal Quality List, including the Company and Securities Law Journal, Columbia Journal of Asian Law, and Australian Journal of Asian Law. Currently, she is teaching at the University of Sydney Law School and her research focuses on corporate law, corporate governance, and comparative corporate laws.
Dr. Peicheng (Matthew) Wu
Research Fellow at Guanghua Law School of Zhejiang University
Peicheng (Matthew) Wu conducted his research on ‘Essence and Extension: When does the Use of Trade Secrets Constitute the Abuse of Market Dominance in China?’. Matthew was enrolled in the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU)–UNSW joint PhD program, where he was jointly supervised by UNSW supervisors Professor Deborah Healey, Associate Professor Xiaochuan Weng and Associate Professor Alexandra George and SJTU supervisor Professor Xianlin Wang.
The SJTU–UNSW Joint PhD Program builds upon existing research collaborations and relationships that have already been established between the two Universities and aims to promote international academic talent cultivation while strengthening collaborative partnerships between UNSW and SJTU.
Matthew graduated in 2022 with a Doctor of Philosophy jointly awarded by both UNSW and SJTU as part of the Joint PhD program between the two universities. Since completing his doctoral degree, Matthew joined the Guanghua Law School of Zhejiang University as a research fellow. Matthew is also a part-time research fellow at the Centre for Competition Law and Policy of SJTU.
Matthew’s current research focuses on competition law, intellectual property law, and digital law governance.
Dr. Shangxuan (Martin) Wu
Research Associate Professor at East China University of Political Science and Law
Shangxuan (Martin) Wu conducted his research on ‘CSR institutionalization and CSR indices construction: From a China-Australia comparison perspective’.
Martin was enrolled in the SJTU-UNSW joint PhD program in 2018 where he was jointly supervised by UNSW supervisors Associate Professor Xiaochuan Weng, Associate Professor Marina Nehme, and SJTU supervisor Professor Li Yang.
Martin graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy under the joint PHD program of UNSW and SJTU in 2022.
Shangxuan obtained a master’s degree of arts (MA) from School of Humanities and Social Science, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and a bachelor’s degree of laws (LLB) from Law School, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU).
Since completing his doctoral degree, Martin has been offered a role as a Research Associate Professor at East China University of Political Science and Law, a remarkable achievement for a recent graduate.
Dr. Dan Xie
Research Associate Professor at East China University of Political Science and Law
Dan Xie conducted her research on ‘Transnational Due Process and Article V(1)(b) of the New York Convention: Grounding Interpretation and Application of the Due Process Defence in the Public International Law Framework for Treaty Interpretation’. Her supervisors were Professor Lucas Lixinski, Associate Professor Jonathan Bonnitcha, Emeritus Professor Leon Trakman and Associate Professor Jeanne Huang.
She holds an LL.M. in International Commercial Arbitration (Magna Cum Laude) from Stockholm University and an LL.M. in Civil and Commercial Law (Summa Cum Laude) and an LL.B. (Summa Cum Laude) from China University of Political Science and Law. Her current research focuses on international dispute settlement, private international law and international trade law. Dan has published papers in Arbitration International (Oxford University Press), Transnational Dispute Management, IGI Publishing, ACICA Review (Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration), and Arbitration and Law (China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Centre). She was also a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law funded by the Guest Scholarship.
After completing her doctoral degree, Dan joined East China University of Political Science and Law as a Research Associate Professor.
